Utilities, public, private, and hybrid alike, have been slow to adopt cloud-based technologies. This reluctance has been attributed to a variety of circumstances: cybersecurity concerns, a “build operations” mindset, and the traditional industry financial and regulatory models that are built on capital versus operating expenditures.
But at this point there are a handful of successful cloud adoption use cases that set an example for the rest of the industry to follow, particularly as the enhanced benefits of cloud cybersecurity become known, and as additional, industry-specific cloud solutions emerge.
Viable cloud business cases require evaluating cost models, application suitability, IT staffing and skill requirements, cybersecurity, and operational risks. This analysis should reveal how a given utility can improve its operational performance, achieve greater efficiencies and responsiveness, decrease overall operating expenses, and reduce environmental complexities.
