There’s a paradox in exercise design with which we all must contend. The irony of this work is that we feel responsible for everything, yet we control very little. The success of an exercise depends on the planning committee’s foresight, the participants’ engagement, and the evaluators’ insight. When any one of them falters it reflects poorly, justly or not, on the design team. So without direct control over those upon whom we depend, how can we set ourselves up for success? The answer is by exerting influence through: 1) having a vision and 2) communicating it with clarity and passion.
