On Earth Day, April 22, volunteers from Booz Allen offices across the DC metro area rolled up their sleeves and got to work cleaning used plastic toys to prepare them for brand-new owners. The effort was the culmination of a month-long volunteer project in partnership with Second Chance Toys, a non-profit with a mission to keep plastic toys out of landfills by donating them to children in need.
Given the nature of plastic, used toys often show little signs of wear. When these “good-as-new” toys are thrown out, they become waste in a landfill, take up a lot of space, and do not biodegrade. Second Chance Toys provides a waste-need solution to this problem. Twice yearly, the organization collects unwanted plastic toys and donates them to organizations that care for children in need.
Throughout April, Booz Allen employees collected toys at offices across the country. While efforts in Colorado and North Carolina are ongoing, volunteers in the DC Metro area collected and cleaned more than 800 toys that will be donated to Jill’s House, the National Center for Children and Families, and Northern Virginia Family Services.
