I suppose you could call me an “eclectic” volunteer. When presented with a host of charitable opportunities organized by Booz Allen volunteers, I feel compelled to check my schedule and match up whatever I can fit in. This gives me a chance to give back to many different causes important to our communities, Booz Allen staff, and myself. I’ve gotten a chance to participate in the Face of America Ride, International Coastal Cleanup, blood drives, and so much more.
The absolute greatest thing is—and I’m proud to say this—I’m not unique at Booz Allen. Recently during a meeting of leaders at the firm, the topic turned to community involvement. Everyone was involved in something. That’s a personal commitment that comes from within and it’s good for the soul, but it’s also evidence of Booz Allen’s culture—our staff care, and as a firm, we care, too.
There’s another great event I’m proud to be supporting—the September 20 Dulles Day Plane Pull benefitting Special Olympics Virginia.
Special Olympics Virginia is a great organization with committed volunteers from within Booz Allen and outside of it. You know, anyone willing to dip a toe, let alone “plunge” into frigid waters in the dead of winter has to be committed. Earlier this year I attended the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Virginia and saw first-hand that dedication. So it’s been fun to help generate support for the Plane Pull, alongside the many other dedicated Booz Allen volunteers. The event has now gotten “wings” of its own, with more than 5 participating teams and has burgeoned into something that more than 200 staff in the Washington Metro area are supporting—with their volunteer time, as pullers, and with their donations.
It’s going to be a great day and I hope as many people as possible can come—to support the pullers and more importantly to help the mission of Special Olympics Virginia. You’ll recognize Booz Allen’s volunteers—they’ll be the ones in the red shirts. For my part—I’ll be there cheering everyone one and offering a little celebration, on me, for the winning Booz Allen team.
